Keep Your Head Down To Drain More putts

Q.

Jack:

I read your “tips” with keen interest. I also try to follow my father’s advice on putting: Listen for the putt going in, he’d say. He also said to my brother and me: “You can’t lose a ball on the green, keep your head down.” That was 60 years ago! What’s new in golf?

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the question, Stan. Your father gave you some sage advice. Lifting your head to see where your putt goes is among the biggest mistakes golfers make when putting. When you lift your head to see where the ball is going, you tend to come out of your stance prematurely, throwing your putt off. Keeping your head down helps you drain more putts.

As for what’s new in golf, we don’t have enough space in our newsletter to answer that question, so much has changed in 60 years. But the basics remain the same. It’s why they’re called the basics.

Below is a drill that teaches you to keep your head still and eyes focused on the ball until the putt drops:

Find a flat spot on the green. Place a penny on the ground. Then place a ball directly on the penny. Now take your normal putting stroke. Focus on seeing the penny after you hit the ball. Continue the drill from varying distances.

By focusing on the penny after you hit the ball, you continue accelerating through your stroke—a key to draining more putts.
