#13 Toughest Shot In Golf -Stinger Off The Tee

Toughest Shot #13-Stinger Off The Tee

Savvy golfers hit a 3-wood or 5-wood off the tee instead of a driver when under pressure. That’s because these clubs provide more control than the driver.  But if they want the ultimate in control, hit a “stinger” instead. Popularized by Tiger Woods, the stinger is a knockdown shot hit with either a long iron or a fairway wood that has a low trajectory. It works in all conditions. But it’s tricky to hit. That’s why it made our toughest list.

Below are six keys to hitting a stinger off the tee:

  •    Set up with the ball back about 2 inches
  •  Choke down on the club an inch or two
  •  Open your stance about two inches
  • Turn the back of your left hand down
  • Keep your arms relaxed through impact
  • Shorten your follow-through

Set up with the ball back in your stance about two inches and your front foot flared out about the same. Now choke down on a fairway wood or long iron a couple of inches, which makes the club easier to hit. It also stiffens the shaft to produce a penetrating shot.

Having set up to the ball, make an almost full backswing. As you come down, focus on turning the back of your left hand down so it faces the ground more at impact than normal. This move de-lofts the club. Also, keep your arms relaxed through impact and shorten your follow-through.

Don’t try to “muscle” the ball by moving forward. If you do try to muscle the ball, you’ll hit the ball higher and with a lot of backspin on it—the opposite of what you want. Instead, let your release do the work.

Every golfer needs a “go to” shot on the tee. The stinger is Tiger Woods “go to” shot because it provides great control. It can do the same for you.
