This Golf Drill Helps Eliminate Bad Shots

Improve Your Chip Shots

How many strokes could you save if you stopped hitting bad shots—the kind of shots that land you in big trouble. These shots cost you big-time on your scorecard, ruining your round.

You hit bad shots because you swing over or under the proper swing plane. That’s deadly. Swinging too far over leads to slices and pulls. Swinging too far under leads to pushes and smother hooks. None of these shots help your score.

The 3-step golf drill below teaches you to swing on the proper swing plane more consistently. That eliminates bad shots and cuts strokes from your scores.

Consistent Shot Golf Drill

Use a 6-, 7-, or 8-iron for this drill:

  • Lay a club down pointing to your target line and get into your address posture. Place the sole of the club in the fingers of your right hand with the back of your cavity facing your palm. Hold the club’s butt against your shoulder with your left hand.
  • Take the club to the top of your backswing. Keep the shaft pinned firmly against your shoulders. Stop and hold the top position for a moment.
  • Now swing down to impact. Make sure you point the club head at the shaft on the ground as your swing down. Your right shoulder should point to the shaft on the ground, too.

That’s what it means to be on plane. Keep practicing this drill until you’ve ingrained the feeling of being on plane.

Once you’ve ingrained the feeling of being on plane, you’ll find yourself hitting solid, straight shots again and again and again.
