The best part of this 5 minute video is that we go over the proper swing planes for both tall and short players (yes, we all have different planes.)

All golfers want to improve. Those serious about doing so take golf lessons from professionals or study golf tips offered in books, magazines, and newsletters, like mine. Usually, the golf lessons and golf tips focus on swing flaws. Refining your swing to eliminate flaws is a great way to improve ballstriking. Understanding how club design dictates the quality of impact is also a great way to improve ballstriking. In fact, it may be just as good, if not better than, working at eliminating swing flaws.

When we discuss club design, we usually talk clubhead size or shaft materials. These can affect your ballstriking and shot distance. But here we want to discuss a different aspect of club design. A club has three key design features:

* shaft lean toward target,
* significant lie (or shaft lean toward body),
* center of gravity

These features exist in every club, even your putter. They contain secrets on how to swing your drivers, wedges, and irons to improve your ballstriking, if we interpret them correctly. In other words, if we look at the features closely, we’ll see how they dictate proper golf swing mechanics.

Shaft Lean Toward Target
Shaft lean is the first, and possibly the most important, club design feature to consider. If you sole a club properly in your normal address position, you’ll see that the club sits on an angle where the handle leans slightly toward the target. The angle is important. It represents the angle at which the club must be delivered to the ball at impact to create optimal pressure. This pressure compresses a ball to a portion of its original size when hit, just like a racquet does with a tennis ball does when it’s hit or a wall does when rubber is thrown against it.

Effective ball compression causes the ball to spring off a clubface at maximum velocity. The only way to effectively compress the golf ball—and produce crisp, clean shots—is to deliver a forward leaning shaft at impact, whether you’re swinging a driver, iron, or wedge. This leads to maximum distance. A backward leaning shaft, on the other hand, doesn’t achieve maximum distance because it lacks the pressure needed to compress the ball enough to maximize impact.

Using A Backward Leaning Shaft
Most golfers present a backward leaning shaft at impact, where the club’s handle leans away from the target instead of toward it. A backward leaning shaft reduces the compression being delivered to the ball, leading to poor contact, poor direction, and a serious loss of distance. But you can learn to deliver a forward-leaning shaft with few simple chipping and pitching drills:

Begin by using a sand wedge. Place the ball well back in your stance to play a chip shot. The shaft should lean forward so that the handle is positioned in front of the clubhead, with your hands in front of your left pant pleat. Using your arms and shoulders only, swing the club back and through. Make sure you lead the handle of the club through the impact area. Hold the finish. The shaft should line up with your left arm and the ball should pop in the air. You’ve just hit a chip.

Next, widen your stance. Place the ball in the center of your feet. Make the same swing as before, but add some wrist hinge on your backswing. This will carry the ball a little further. Make sure to lead with the handle through impact as before. Continue to the same follow through position as the chip. You’ve just hit a pitch and run.

Keep Impact Attitude in Mind
Finally, hit some shots with your full swing, while keeping the same “impact attitude” in mind, as you have for the previous shots. You should notice a big difference in the quality of contact you get from this swing.

Forward-shaft lean is one of three key club design features. These features point the way to efficient swings when examined closely. Forward-shaft lean encourages you to swing the ball with a forward-leaning shaft at impact just like you’re taught in golf instruction sessions and like how the clubmakers designed the club to be swung. If you want improved ballstriking, you must strike the ball with the impact attitude designed into the club. If you do, you’ll hit longer, straighter shots that will help take strokes off your golf handicap.

We all know that hitting the ball properly and as far as possible are very important if we want to score as low as possible.

But did you know that there is one part of the golf swing that can REALLY RUIN your game if not done correctly? See, there’s one thing that can ROB your swing of precious distance and proper ball contact and it can be really frustrating trying to figure it out.

So, I’ve made a short five minute video that shows you exactly what this miscue is and how to avoid it.

Yes, this is part of our latest Seniors DVD but in fairness to those who are not seniors, this same concept and instruction applies so it would be beneficial to see this eye-opening video. It’s just that this issue is more prevalent in seniors but trust me, there are still a great majority of us who commit this mistake, regardless of age.

Make sure to watch the entire video because some of the best drills and explanations are toward the end.

Enjoy!

P.S. This video tip is part of the brand new Seniors DVD which we recently launched. Learn how to play the best golf of your life with this unique and proven system.

Save Strokes from Hillside Lies

Golfers botch hillside lies for two reasons: They either fail to make solid contact on or lose their balance during the shot. The reason: With sidehill and downhill lies, you tend to lean into the hill as you swing. The result: an inconsistent array of fat and thin shots. But if you make clean contact on hillside lies, you’ll hit it straighter and save strokes.

Below are four keys to making clean contact with hillside lies:

Adjust your club selection

Adjust your ball position

Flare your downhill foot

Make your normal shot

The key to this shot is making sure your shoulders match the hill’s slope, which you can do with a simple adjustment of your front foot.

Start by choosing your club. An uphill lie adds loft to your club. Use a less lofted club. A downhill lie subtracts loft from your club. Use a more lofted club.

Adjust your ball position as well. For an uphill lie, play the ball forward an inch or two. For a downhill lie, play the ball in the middle of your stance or slightly back.

Finally, match your shoulders to the slope without losing your balance. Do this by flaring your front foot about 45 degrees. Then swing normally.

Your flared foot evens out your stance and puts the ball at the bottom of your swing. This keeps you from slamming your clubhead into the hill or the center of your ball. A flared foot also gives you more freedom of movement in your backswing and makes you feel balanced while swinging.

Don’t let hillside lies throw you. Make solid contact by (1) adjusting your club selection and ball position, and (2) matching your shoulders to the slope by flaring your front foot. Learn to make clean contact on hillside lies and odds are you’ll eliminate those extra shots that pad your scores.

Hitting the 3-Wood High Or Low

One course I play has two different types of par 5s. Both greens are reachable from the fairway in two with a 3-wood. But on one you must go over a small pond to reach the green. On the other you have nothing but fairway between you and the green. On the first you want to hit a high shot that falls softly on the green. On the second you want to hit a low shot that runs to the green.

Here are five keys to hitting the 3-wood from a tight fairway lie:

Play the ball back in your stance

Sweep the ball off the turf

Hit with a descending blow

Shift your weight to the front side

Swing through the ball

The key to hitting different shots with the 3-wood is to adjust your stance, not your swing, to achieve the lofts you need. In fact, it’s almost always better adjust your stance than change your swing.

For the high shot over the water, play the ball a little more forward in your stance and drop your hands slightly at address. Also place a bit more weight over your back foot by tilting your spine away from your target. These adjustments position you perfectly to sweep the ball off the turf while adding loft to your clubface.

To play a shot with a lower, more piercing trajectory, do the opposite. Position the ball where you’d play a mid-iron and set more weight on your forward leg. These adjustments de-loft the club at impact and produce the lower ball flight you need to run the ball to the green.

Adjusting your stance to achieve a different shot with the 3-wood is the preferred option when you need different ball flights from the same club. It’s both safer and easier to execute this move than changing your swing.

Question of the Week – Conquering Those Long Bunker Shots

Q. Hi Jack, I get out of greenside bunkers fairly easily, but the longer bunker shots are a problem. What do you suggest for a 25- to 50-foot bunker shot?

Robert K Mokros
Spring Hill, Florida

A. Thanks for the question, Robert. The goal with a long bunker shot is to hit the ball high and drop it softly on the green.

Using a normal set-up, position the ball just inside your front heel, open your stance slightly, and grip down on the club, applying light to moderate pressure. Point the clubface at the target and the shaft’s butt at your stomach.

As you start back, cup the back of your left wrist (right wrist for lefties). This adds loft to the clubface. On the way down, maintain the cup of the left for a long as possible. Feel as if you’re pulling down with the left arm. Then lock the back of the left wrist, allowing the clubface to slide through sand without it closing.

Finally, let your hands and wrist fall together as the body weight shifts to the outside of the front foot. Keep your head behind the ball by trying to peek under it at impact.

You’ll need a lot of backspin with this shot. So use a wide arc during your backswing by keeping your hands as far from your shoulders as possible. Also, use an inside-to-square-to-inside swing path.

Execute the golf tips explained above and you’ll hit a long bunker shot that drops softly on the green.

Article – Five Keys For A Simple Swing
Article – A Simple Plan To Improve Your Short Game

Jack’s Note: Golf’s playoffs are finally here… the Fedex Cup. I am personally nota huge fan of it because I think the real trophies are the four majors. But I will say it keeps the season interesting.

How much is a good golf lesson worth? It really depends on how bad you want to improve I guess. And now we have a way you can get seven of those priceless lessons for about half of what a normal lesson would cost.

Slide and Turn For Distance

To really drive the ball, you must make a full shoulder turn. By doing so you assure proper weight transfer and boost the chances of swinging on the correct plane. Both things lead to increased distance. But if you’re going to drive the ball, you also must employ your hips properly.

Below are the five keys to employing your hips properly:

Make a smooth transition

Start down with your hips

Slide hips slightly toward the target

Shift weight to front foot

Return front foot to ground

To hit for power, you must retain the front-side tension built up in the backswing. Ultimately, the tension creates the clubhead speed needed to drive the ball. To retain that tension at the start of the downswing, you must move forward with your hips, slide them slightly toward the target, and then uncoil them back to the left. In other words, slide then turn your hips at the same time.

Also, as you start forward, shift your weight onto your front foot, and return your front heel, pulled up on the backswing, to the ground. During the hip slide-turn, keep your arms and shoulders in the same position they were in at the top of the swing. You can feel the tension of the backswing coil as you complete this sequence.

The best players actually start forward with the hips before the upper body has quite completed the backswing. But that requires perfect timing, so it’s best that weekend golfers slide then turn to start the downswing. Below is a drill that helps improve your shoulder turn:

Get a driver or an iron and take your normal stance. Tuck a golf ball under your back armpit. Now swing the club. If you move your arms without turning properly, the ball drops out. If you execute the turn properly, the ball remains in your armpit throughout the backswing.

This drill teaches you to keep your arms from separating during the backswing. From there, it’s just a matter of following the sequence described above. If you do that, you should start getting additional distance from your drives.

Sticking It With A Hybrid

For those who watched the final round of the PGA Championship, the shot of the day was Y.E Yang’s chip-in for an eagle. It gave him a one shot lead over Tiger Woods, which Yang never lost. But an equally critical shot was Yang’s second shot on the 18th—a hybrid draw to within 12 feet of the pin. That shot was just as important and dramatic as the chip-in because it sealed the win. It’s a great shot to be able to hit on command. Let’s review the shot’s keys:.

Below are six keys to hitting the hybrid draw:

Adopt a closed stance

Hood the clubface

Follow an inside path

Hit down, not up

Stop short of parallel

Turn the hands over

You have to make some minor adjustments to hit a good hybrid draw. Begin by setting up with the ball slightly back in a closed stance. To ensure a low, right-to-left ball flight (for right-handers), hood the clubface by turning its toe toward the target. To hit a higher, hybrid draw, position the clubface square to the ball, and put a little more weight on your back foot. Also, move the ball slightly forward.

When swinging, concentrate on taking the club back inside. Pull the club back as usual, but stop well short of parallel on your backswing. Once you get to the top, swing down, as if you were hitting an iron off the fairway. Turn your hands over on the way through the ball, with the right hand eventually resting on the left. Also, maintain the slight bend that occurs in your right wrist all the way through impact.

Of course, you’ll need to practice a hybrid draw to ingrain the feeling of hitting one solidly. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to hit the hybrid draw on command. It’s a good safe shot to have in your bag of tricks.

Question of the Week – Increasing Driving Accuracy

Q. Hi Jack, My main problem with my woods is a fade. Occasionally, I hit a slice with my woods. The driver is the worst. My 3-wood is the better of the woods, at 60-70% accuracy. With my irons I usually reach the greens in regulation. I have broken my handicap in my last three rounds and used metals for no more that five strokes. Currently playing off 23 my goal is to reach 10. This will require more accuracy with my drivers. Any suggestions?

Regards
Geoff Dening

A. Thanks, Geoff. Accuracy is about balance, control, and rhythm. So when it comes to my students, I generally tell them: Keep your swing on plane, maintain good rhythm, and control your clubface. Don’t lift your right heel (for right-handed golfers) too high. Don’t pin your right elbow to your body. And feel your right shoulder hit your chin as you make contact with the ball.”

If I had to give mental tips, I would keep the five tips below in mind the next time you have to hit the fairway:

Don’t assume your going to hit a perfect shot

Relax. Don’t allow tension to creep into your set-up

Tee up on the side of trouble to guard against a bad shot

Aim for a clear definite target within reach

Don’t worry about distance. Accuracy is the priority.

Keeping these mental tips in mind and using proper swing mechanics will help improve your accuracy.

Here’s a drill used by Davis Love III to improve accuracy. His father taught it to him when the son was young. The father had young Davis work on hitting 125 yards shots and then 150-yard shots while taking a full driver swing. Once Davis learned this, he progressed to 175, 200, and 250 yards. The drill lengthens your swing arc, helps develop great control, and creates a heightened sense of rhythm.

Concern #1: Will This Work for Me?

The biggest question that we have received so far is “Will this work for me”? Those that are using the our fundamentals-based swing already know that this instruction works. However, we believe that this question does apply to everyone, so we’re going to address it.

Background:

If you’ve been with us for some time now you probably know that- we believe in testing everything before we get it to you. To do that with this Full Swing Lessons Video, we gave the video to a group of 18 golfers in AZ over a period of 4 weeks. What we found was really astonishing. On average, the golfer that tried these methods:

    * Stayed on the fairways more often – almost 25% more often.
* Lowered their average scores by 3.5 strokes the very first round after watching the DVD.

I personally wish they had dropped more strokes but wasn’t surprised by the nearly four strokes they were able to drop immediately. But from the comments on the previous online videos that were sent out you can tell that the stuff really works. Here’s more of what we found.

Before watching the DVDs, our group of 18 golfers hit an average of 8.2 fairways through a round of 18. Not too shabby. If you figure an average of 4 par threes over 18 holes, our golfers were already hitting 8 of 14 fairways. After watching the Full Swing Lessons instruction only once, our subjects improved to 9.8 fairways hit. If after watching one video, you hit one more fairway per round, I’m sure you’d take it.

Bottom Line:

By hitting and staying on the fairway more often, the golfers we tested improved their average score by 3.5 strokes. They stayed on the fairway more often, had easier approach shots, giving them better putting opportunities, and ultimately lowering their scores. We couldn’t have asked for a better result.

Our test subjects experience was a very positive one and we are confident that you will experience similar results.

Concern #2: Will I Have to Change My Swing?

Many people have been asking if they will have to change their swing to be able to benefit from this DVD.

The beautiful thing about the swing we teach is that we don’t believe in changing someone’s swing from the ground up, just to change their swing. We believe that some golfers need to focus just on one or two swing mechanics that they are not currently doing correctly. This instruction will tweak your swing instead of completely revising it. The idea is to give the golfer different swing thoughts and minor mechanical adjustments only. None of the golfers in our test were asked to change their swings in any major way. We just worked with them to refine their swing and improve in minor areas to get the best results.

Each golfer on this DVD has been experiencing some problem in their swing – hooking, pushing, hitting the ball fat, etc. – so we only cover with them the things that we see them doing to cause these problems and how we think they should fix it. If we have a golfer that’s pulling the ball, we won’t suggest a completely new swing to resolve their pull, we just tweak their current swing to remove the pull. By watching these golfers’ swings before and after my fixes, it will help you to find the fixes to your own swing issues and correct them.

Bottom Line:

This instruction will help you find and fix the issues in your own golf swing as well as any single golf lesson you can get. It will do it at half the price of an hour long golf lesson and best of all, you can watch this lesson over and over again. Whenever you experience an issue in your golf swing, just pop the video back in the player and give it a watch.

We’re really looking forward to hearing all of the great successes that you have after watching this video. I know that it will help to improve your game almost immediately. Only a few days left until this is released, and we’ll keep you informed in the coming days. We look forward to working with you.

Hitting A Long Explosion Shot

A greenside bunker 20 to 30 yards from the pin isn’t where you want to be with an approach shot or a drive. But even the best of us find ourselves there occasionally. The long explosion shot from a distant bunker is one of the hardest shots for weekend golfers to make, if not the hardest.

Below are six tips for hitting a long explosion shot:

Close your stance instead of opening

Widen your stance a couple of inches

Work your feet firmly into the ground

Concentrate on just skimming the sand

Rotate the clubface open to closed

The keys to this shot are two adjustments in your stance. Since you want to make a long accelerating swing, you need a firm foundation. Widening your stance helps. So does working your feet into the ground. But don’t work them in so much that you can’t move them. In addition, close your stance. Your feet should be parallel. That lengthens your swing and makes it easier to bring the club into the ball from inside the line of play.

Use your sand wedge for this shot and focus on just skimming the sand as you go through the ball. Also, rotate the clubface from open to closed on the downswing, which you can do by turning your right hand over your left through impact. Incorporating these adjustments into your stance helps you hit an accurate shot.

We can’t stop ourselves from landing in a bunker 20 to 30 yards from the green. No one can. But good golfers get out in one. Hitting a long explosion shot will help you do that, keep your scores in check, and trim strokes from your golf handicap.

Hitting A Flop Shot From Bare Ground

Phil Mickelson hits accurate flop shots from difficult lies—including bare ground. Hitting a flop shot from bare ground is a challenge. It’s also risky. If you mis-hit it, it can cost you strokes big time. That’s why golfers stay away from hitting a flop shot from this type of lie. But when you have to do it, a flop shot from bare ground can help turn three strokes into two.

Below are six keys to hitting a flop shop from bare ground:

Use a lob wedge with minimal bounce

Keep the shaft vertical or leaning away

Swing your arms to the left (right for left-handers)

Swing longer for higher shots

Keep legs quiet throughout the shot

Complete your follow-through

The secret to hitting a flop shot from bare ground is the wedge’s sole. Use a lob wedge with a sole that has minimal bounce—especially in the heel. Bounce is the flange on the club’s sole that extends below the leading edge. To hit a good shot, you must use the bounce effectively.

Also, keep the shaft vertical or slightly leaning away from the target, which means your hands will be even with or slightly behind the ball. Keeping the shaft vertical exposes the club’s bounce and enables its leading edge to slide under the ball. You want the trailing edge to go into the ground.

And keep your legs quiet from start to finish. On the follow-through, swing your arms to the left (right for right-handers). This prevents the club from de lofting and bouncing off the ground and into the ball. Remember, the longer your swing the higher the ball goes. But it travels only slightly farther.

This approach to hitting a flop shot works for any lie. Of course, there’s no flop shot approach that’s fail-safe. That’s why you need to be judicious about when you use it. But if you’re going to use it, make sure you commit to the shot before swinging.

Question of the Week – Hitting A Ball Above Your Feet

Q. Dear Jack, My question is, whenever I have a shot where my feet are lower than the ball I tend to take more dirt than I would like to, loosing all power and distance.

Help?
Judy Siblock
Northern Ontario, Canada

A. Thanks for the question, Judy. Hitting a ball above your feet is simply a matter of making a few adjustments.

Three things can happen when you don’t make the right adjustments. First, since the ball automatically moves left to right, you’ll pull the shot out of bounds. Second, on shots above your feet, you can shift your upper body forward during the swing and come into the ball at a lower than normal, hitting the ball fat. Third, you can lose your balance and pop out of you stance, resulting in a weak slice.

To hit a ball above your feet, adjust your stance so you’re aiming right of the flagstick, which compensates for the tendency to pull the ball left. Center your weight above your arches feet, not on the balls of your feet, which helps you swing along the slope and stay in balance throughout the shot. And keep your posture constant so you can maintain the same spine angle you set at address through impact. You can also choking down on the club.

Make these adjustments next time you have this type of lie and you’ll hit the ball solidly.

Hit It Close From A Sidehill Lie

A sidehill lie into the green is a delicate shot. But miss it and you can add two or more strokes to your score. You must factor in not only the distance to the green, but also the effects of the sidehill lie. The biggest danger is taking a straight-back backswing into the slope. That’s the quickest way to shank the shot and tack strokes onto your score.
Below are five keys to this shot:

Plan your shot based on the lie

Match your stance to the shot

Center the ball in your stance

Distribute your weight evenly

Shape your swing to the slope

Plan your shot based on what you expect. If the ball is above your feet, the ball will hook. It the ball is below your feet, the ball will fade. Also consider the club being used. With longer irons the ball will hook or fade more than with shorter clubs.

Now, match your stance and swing to the slope.

If the ball is above your feet, address the ball with a slightly closed stance, position the ball in the center, and distribute your weight evenly. Take the club back on an inside-out path. That will produce a drawing trajectory.

If the ball is below your feet, set up with a slightly open stance, position the ball in the center, and distribute your weight evenly. But use an outside-in path to the ball. That will produce a fading trajectory.

If the ball is in the rough, expect a straighter shot than from the fairway. The grass will catch and turn the clubface. That’s means you can take a more aggressive line at the pin. Just don’t over do it.

Knowing what to expect from this type of lie is half the battle. The other half is matching your stance and swing to the slope. Plan your shot accordingly and knock it close to save strokes.

Three Critical Decisions On Short Pitches

Golfers often commit two costly mistakes on short pitches. They square their stances and they open their clubfaces. Both hurt the shot big time. A square stance leads to a steeper swing and an open clubface shanks the ball sideways. But asking yourself three key questions before making the shot and you’re chances of hitting it close rise dramatically. Use this a routine whenever you have a short pitch.

The questions are

What kind of shot do I hit?

What’s the best club for the shot?

What kind of swing do I use?

Many golfers choose the wrong club, use the wrong shot, and/or employ the wrong technique on short pitches. Check your lie carefully on short pitches before choosing your club. The lie is good if you can slide the ball under the club. A good lie allows you to use a more lofted club, like a 60-dgree wedge, for maximum touch.

Also, open your stance. This pre-rotates your body to the target. That in turn keeps your swing shallow and helps the club slide through the grass.

Now, play the ball off your front heel and open the clubface. Swing down along your stance. And don’t flip the club. There’s no need. You have plenty of loft to get the ball in the air. It comes out high and soft, just like you want.

Don’t commit two common mistakes on short pitches. It just adds strokes to your score. Before hitting, ask yourself the three questions mentioned above. Answering them will help you choose the right club, the right shot, and the right technique.

After that, it’s just a matter of applying the right amount of touch to hit it close, saving a stroke or two on the hole.

Question of the Week – Overcoming Bunker Shot Blues

Q. Dear Jack, Even though I try to apply all that I can read about bunker shots around the green, I still either skull the ball over the green, or I hit too far behind the ball and it stays in the bunker. The result is frustration. Do I need a lesson?

Thanks,
Archie Buie

A. Thanks for the question, Archie. Golf lessons never hurt. In many cases, they help a great deal. But there are drills you can do on your own to improve your bunker game, in addition to studying technique and reading golf tips.

Below are two exercises for improving their bunker technique:

* This drill establishes how the sand wedge should really work. Stand in a practice bunker without a ball. Adopt your normal bunker stance and take several swings down into the sand. The object is to get the feel of the clubhead dragging through the sand, not digging into it. After a dozen shots, try hitting a ball. Pick out a spot where you want the ball to land and then go for it. Repeat the exercise until you’re comfortable with the feel of the wedge splashing through the sand.

* The Two Lines drill eliminates the tendency to lose focus during the shot. Stand in a bunker and take your normal bunker stance. Now draw two lines in the sand, about six or seven inches apart. The lines represent the length of the sand you should carve from under the ball. Line up several balls between the two lines, and then hit them. The clubhead should enter the sand where the first line is and emerge where the second line is.
Practicing these two exercises builds better bunker technique. As you improve your technique, you’ll increase your confidence in the shot. And confidence leads to a lower score per round and a lower golf handicap.

Negotiating Around Trees

Nobody plans to end up behind a tree. But even the best of us end up there occasionally. A tree requires a decision. You either have to go over it or go under it. Going over it is risky. It requires crisp contact and a lot of carry. It’s the option to choose if you have to get it close to the green with little roll or if there’s a bunker in front of it. A safer play is going under the tree by playing a punch shot. If you choose wrong, it can cost you big time.

Below are five keys to playing a punch shot under a tree:

Use a long iron or a hybrid
Play the ball in the middle
Use minimal cock in the wrist
Employ a sweeping motion
Make ball-first contact

If you decide to go high, on the other hand, play the ball forward in your stance. Open the clubface. And keep your weight on your back foot. As you take the club back, make a full backswing, with a swift and steep wrist cock. The wrist cock is the key to getting the ball in the air.

Begin the downswing by turning—not shifting—forward. This is critical. If you shift your weight forward, you de-loft the club. Also, keep the clubface open well through impact. And don’t try to scoop the ball. Trust the loft on your club.

Don’t let one bad shot ruin your hole. When behind a tree, weigh the decision carefully. If you’re not adept at going over the tree, don’t risk it. Go under it and try to set yourself up for the next shot.

Severe Downhill Greenside Chip

This is one tough shot. No doubt about it. You have to deal not only with a difficult lie, but also with the green’s break. Why? From a down hill lie, the ball rolls more than normal after hitting the green. Thus, you must factor in break and speed to have any chance of getting the ball close.

Below are six keys to the shot:

Chose your most lofted club
Adjust your weight to the slope
Play the ball back in your stance
Aim the clubface at landing spot
Keep your hands forward

Choose your most lofted club. Address the ball with an open stance. And adjust your weight to the slope of the hill. Align your club as perpendicular to the ground as possible. Doing so will force your weight on to your forward foot, which is where it should be.

Next, play the ball in the back of your stance. Position your hands forward with the clubface aiming at your chosen landing spot on the green or fringe, where you want the ball to start rolling. As you start your back swing, swing along the ground and keep your hands low to the ground well into the finish. This is key.

Also, don’t hesitate to land the ball on the fringe, if that’s your best landing spot. The ball has some spin so it will roll through the fringe before stopping. Whatever you do, don’t try to scoop the ball. It doesn’t work from this lie—or from any other lie for that matter.

This shot is a challenge. But it can be made, if you remember our keys. You probably won’t face it a lot during a round, unless you’re playing on a very hilly course. Even then, you might not get it more than once a round. But knowing how to hit it can save strokes.

Question of the Week – Maintaining Tempo Increases Consistency

Q. Hi Jack, I am a weekend golfer and play to a handicap of 12. My swing is out to in and I end up slicing while using irons. My ball placement for long irons is centre, mid irons an inch back of center, and one inch back for short irons.

I have been experimenting with ball placement and would like to know if this placement is good or I need to bring the ball closer to right foot.

Regards
Yash

A. Thanks for the question. Ball position is a fundamental question golfers often take for granted. There are two schools of thought on the subject. Jack Nicklaus says there’s one position for the ball—opposite the heel of your front foot. When Jack played, he used this position for every club.

Tradition says change ball position depending on the club. The driver’s ideal ball position is just inside the heel of your front foot. The ideal long-iron position is slightly back from drivers’ ball position. The ideal mid-iron position is one or two balls back from the long iron position. And the ideal short-iron position is in the middle of your stance. Keep in mind you may have to make adjustments for slope and lie.

These different positions place the ball at the lowest point in your swing given the club’s length and swing taken. In addition, positioning the ball at the different positions encourages clean contact with a crisp descending blow—the key to blasting solid iron and wood shots.

Revive Your Short Game With These Tips

You can’t make up strokes from the tee box or the green. But from 25 yards and in is a different story. You can do a lot from there to save strokes. As one great golfer said, the game is played from 100 yards and in. Chip, pitch, and bunker shots impact your score than you might think. So if you can’t break 90 or 100, maybe it’s time to revive your short game.

Below are six keys to reviving your short game:

Play the ball a clubhead from the front foot
Shift your weight to the front foot
Don’t scoop the ball
Keep hands in line with your front leg
Rotate your body through the shot
Release the hands after impact

Playing the ball back, trying to scoop the ball, and placing your weight on your back foot are the three most common short game mistakes. With most short game shots, play the ball a clubhead from the front foot, shift your weight forward, and don’t try to scoop the ball. Scoopers don’t understand the mechanics of chipping or pitching. Instead of trying to scoop the ball, let the club work for you. Trust that it has the loft to do the trick.

In addition, align your hands with your front leg at address, rotate your body through the shot, and release your hands after impact. Aligning your hands encourages a downward blow. Rotating your body allows your hands to reach the impact zone at just the right time. And “knocking your knees” on the follow through says you’ve hit the shot correctly, whether it’s from the grass or a bunker.

If your scores are suffering, maybe it’s time to resuscitate your short game. Check your mechanics to see if you’re making any mechanical mistakes. If you are, first eliminate them. Then, watch your scores drop.

Knock It Close From The Rough

Every golfer lands in the rough sooner or later—even the best of us. If the lie is near the green, the shot becomes critical. It can mean the difference between making a bogey or double bogey and a par. To score low, you must know how to knock it close from the really deep stuff. Knocking it close from there chops one or two strokes from your score and often saves par.

Here are five keys to hitting it close from the deep rough:

Add more club and choke down
Position your hands in front of the ball
Play the ball slightly forward
Retain the right angle
Use a steeply descending blow

Some golfers like to use short irons from the deep rough. But that’s hard. It requires a strong grip, a steeply descending blow, and strength. Plus, you can’t release the club too early. Otherwise, you’ll end up hitting a lot of grass and no ball.

Instead, try using a longer iron and choking down. But don’t change anything else: Take your normal stance from the rough. Position your hands in front of the ball. And play the ball slightly forward in your stance. The longer shaft adds leverage to your swing.
Also, retain the right angel formed by the club and your left arm (right for lefties) at the top of your swing as long as possible.

Holding this angle generates the additional club head speed you need to escape deep rough. It also encourages a steeply descending blow and prevents your hands from releasing too early. The ball flies lower coming out of the rough, but that beats a flubbed shot or a complete miss.

Find some thick stuff at an open field or the range and practice hitting from there. You’ll be glad you did.

Question of the Week – Maintaining Tempo Increases Consistency

Q. Hi Jack, How can I slow my swing on a regular basis? When I slow down, I perform as good as anyone. Unfortunately, my head lets me down and up comes the tempo!

Have you any drills I can use to maintain a constant swing?

Kindest regards,
Colin D.

A. Thanks, Colin. Tempo is the time it takes you to complete your full swing. It’s geared to your personality. If you’re deliberate, for example, your tempo is likely to be somewhat slower than a person who’s fast paced. When you’re playing well, your tempo is pretty much the same on every full shot. But when your tempo goes, your game goes as well. That’s why you play well one day and poorly the next.

But developing an appreciation for your tempo isn’t easy. It takes hard work. Below is an exercise for developing your appreciation for tempo:
Address the ball. Raise the club head off the ground slightly. Move it forward to a position a foot or so into the follow-through, and start swinging. Guide the club head back over the ball, complete your backswing, and swing through the ball all in one motion. Repeat this exercise several times. Continue for a while. Eventually, you’ll develop a feel for your swing tempo.

Stop Pulling Your Shots

Pulled shots, like block shots, are high on the list of bad shots. If your spine angle and weight distribution are off at address, there’s a good chance you’ll pull the shot. Putting too much weight on your forward foot at address pushes your spine angle too far forward. It also prompts a swing path that moves from outside the target line pre-swing to inside the target line post impact, resulting in a pulled shot.

Below are five keys to preventing pulled shots:

Address ball as if on an upslope
Shift weight to back foot
Lower your back shoulder
Position your hands behind the ball
Stay behind ball on the swing

Correcting both your weight distribution and spine angle prevents pulled shots. Start by setting up as if you were hitting on an upslope. Then, shift your weight from your front foot to your back foot. Drop your back shoulder slightly so that it’s lower than your front shoulder. And position your hands behind the ball at address. This set-up tilts your spine away from the target and changes your swing path.

To visualize the set up, take an iron from your bag and have a friend step on the clubface. Now match the angle of your shoulders to the angle of the shaft. That sets you up with your spine angle tilted away from the target and your front shoulder higher than your back shoulder. If you keep this image in mind at address, you’ll set yourself up nicely behind the ball. Stay behind the ball when swinging.
By re-distributing your weight and correcting your spine angle, you’ll prevent pulled shots. From this position, your downswing comes from inside the target line and arcs back inside that target line past impact. This results in a square clubface at impact and a straighter flight path. You’ll also gain some distance.

Beating Blocked Shots

Block shots rank high on the list of bad golf shots. If you tend to block shots, you could be swinging too aggressively. If you are, you need to curb your aggressiveness to improve your shot making and improve your game. Once you learn to control your aggressiveness, you can use it more productively.

Below are four golf tips for beating blocked shots.

Better posture, better impact
Less tilt, more coverage
Release the head early
Brace your left side and release

Bad things happen when you’re too aggressive. Over aggressiveness often causes your lower body to outrace your upper body. That forces your upper body to tilt away from the target. When this happens, your back shoulder can drop too far under the backswing plane, leading to a blocked shot. To prevent this, try to “feel tall over the ball,” with your knees slightly bent, and keep your upper body straight during the swing. Better posture means less tilt. Less tilt means better impact.

Lack of head movement also causes blocked shots. It, too, can force you to lose your forward tilt toward the ball. If your head stays down and straight, your hips lunge toward the ball, pulling you out of your posture. But if you turn your head slightly with the shot you’ll have better results. You’ll keep your spine straighter and get the club back in front of your body sooner. When your arms get out in from of your body, they can swing down the line better.

If you block shots off the tee, it may be because you’re swinging too aggressively. Learn to curb your aggressiveness a little. You can then use it to your advantage.

Question of the Week – Hitting Long Irons

Q. Hi Jack, I have been hitting my 3-wood and 5-wood at the driving range, but I am always hooking the ball. I have noted that the contact mark of my ball contact in the clubface is on the toe side. I can’t seem to hit it at the center of the clubface. I would appreciate very much your advice.

Thanks.
Euls Austin

A. Thanks, Euls. If you’re hooking (or pushing), your clubface isn’t square at impact. You can stop hooking with a few minor adjustments at address.

First, check your grip. It could be too strong, which means your right-hand is turned too far to the right. If it is, turn it slightly to the left. (If you’re left-handed, reverse the process.) Turning your right hand prevents it from dominating the shot, a key contributor to hooking. Second, play the ball forward in your stance. Third, open up your upper body slightly in relation to the target line at address.

In addition, make sure the toe of your club points skyward you’re about halfway into your backswing. Point the toe skyward helps square the clubface at impact. Also, work on clearing your body through impact. If you do it right, you’ll feel as if your hips are opening up towards the target and your front shoulder is moving forward as you strike the ball. You’ll also feel as if the grip is moving left, but that the clubface remains open. Ingraining these tips in your swing eliminates hooking (and pushing).

Below is a drill that helps you stop hooking (and pushing):

Lay down two clubs parallel to the target. Position the first is along your feet and the second outside the ball, creating a track with the ball in the middle. Now, swing. As you do, keep your cap’s brim in line with the outer club. This keeps your head on the right swing path. Practice this drill faithfully and you’ll hit straighter shots.

5) Article – 4 Hard Shots Simplified

Jack’s Note: First off, thanks to all of our gracious customers who took the most recent survey on our DVD instruction and whats coming up. I plan to use that input in a meaningful way when were putting together the new instructional products for this year. Also, Ive got some great things lined up for you guys in the coming months and while Im quite excited about them, I cant go into a great deal of detail at this time. But stay tuned because shortly Ill be delivering some of the best instructional content Ive ever put out.

===================================================
1) Stand and Deliver
===================================================
Good posture is critical to hitting the ball solid. The more your back is curved at address, the more likely you’ll lift up to hit the ball. Lifting up prevents you from hitting the ball with authority. It also robs you of power. Keeping your back straight, on the other hand, promotes consistent contact.

Below are 5 steps to attaining perfect posture:

1. Stand tall with feet spread apart
2. Hold the club in front of you
3. Bend forward at the hips
4. Flex your knees
5. Stick out your butt

Standing up straight helps maintain balancea key factor in a good swing. In fact, it’s better to stand too tall than to slouch. Start by standing up straight with the inside of your feet shoulder width apart. Balance your wieght on the balls of your feet. And turn your toes out slightly.

Next, hold the club out in front of you. Bend forward from the hips until the club touches the ground. Your back should remain straight. Flex your knees a bit and stick your butt out slightly. Sticking your butt out helps balance you when you bend forward. Try keeping your back straight throughout your swing.

Your quadricepsthe muscles on the front and outside portion of your thighssupports your swing. To strengthen them, put your back against the wall and slowly lower yourself into a sitting position. Stay there for a few seconds or until your thighs begin to burn. Then push up slowly until your standing. Do this exercise a few times a day and you’ll build those muscles up.

Assuming the proper posture is critical to achieving a good swing. Slouching or slumping prevents your making solid contact and robs you of power. Follow the five-step process discussed above you to attain perfect posture every time.

===================================================
2) Try “Dead-Hands” Chipping Style
===================================================
The secret to improving quickly is mastering the short game. Chipping is a vital component of the short game. So if you’re not blowing people away with your chipping, try using the “dead-hands” approach. The swing is simpler and easier to repeat. It encourages consistency. And the ball behaves the same on almost every shot – although it doesn’t stop as quickly as with the traditional style of chipping.

Here are 5 tips on using the dead-hands approach:

* Set your weight on front foot
* Lean the shaft forward a bit
* Use shoulders and forearms
* Drag the club through impact
* Keep hands and wrist quiet

The key with the dead-hands style is keeping your wrists quiet. With the traditional style, proficient chippers often hinge their wrists abruptly on the backswing to generate clubhead speed and backspin. But if you don’t practice or play a lot, it’s hard to develop consistency with this approach. Enter the dead-hands style.

First, take your normal address position, then set your weight forward. Lean the shaft forward slightly, so that your hands are just ahead of the ball. Now, using just your shoulders and forearms, “drag” the club through impact. All your hands do is hold onto the grip through contact and beyond. And don’t break your wrists.

The dead-hands style eliminates the sudden flick that weekend golfers often make when using the traditional approach to chipping. With this style, both the wrists and hands stay quiet.

You don’t have to wait until youre on the practice green to try this approach. You can practice it in your backyard. And you can practice it during the winter. Chipping doesn’t involve a big swing and if you get proficient chipping over frozen turf, you’ll be dynamite when the whether warms up. Improving your short game is the fastest way of knocking strokes off your golf handicap – bar none.

3) Question of the Week – Achieving a One-Piece Takeaway
=====================================================
Q. Hi, Jack, How is it that Lee Trevino tells his “subjects,” George Lopez, for instance, on his latest Golf Channel appearance, to “always keep the club pointing to the center of the chest until the cocking of the wrist”? Is it at that point when you start the downswing with the body?

Anthony Fernandes

A. Thanks for the question. What Lee is talking about is the takeaway. It determines the swings shape and tempo, so you want to get it right. In a way, it’s a lot like chess. A good opening move can set the tempo of play.

Most instructors tell you that a good takeaway involves using a one-piece movement. Moving the club, hands, arms, and chest in unison keeps the clubhead low and the backswing full during the takeaway. It also starts a wide and powerful move away from the ball.

One way you can achieve a one-piece takeaway is by keeping the club’s butt pointing at the center of your chest until you start cocking your wrists, which usually comes at about hip high. That’s what Lee is saying.

Another way to ensure a smooth, one-piece take away is, at address, to think of your arms and shoulders as forming an inverted isosceles triangle with the club. Focus on turning this triangle back with your chest and naval. Moving the club back in this way guarantees a one-piece take away.
